How to Get Past the Dull Scenes

Okay, we all write scenes that seem so boring, it makes us skip it, or worse, walk away. Some scenes are dull, yes, but you don't have to make them so dull. I write scenes all the time thinking that nobody will ever like it. But, I think, some scenes just have to be a little calm. You can't have action packed scenes every single page. You have to have at least a few scenes to let the readers calm down and take in all the previous action.

To help you get past the calmer scenes, you can do a few things.

1.) You can write them first:

Take your energy and write the calm, but informative scenes, then write the action scenes last. Then put it all together. Sometimes getting them over with first helps you stay motivated because you want to get to the "good" scenes after.

2.) Listen to music that has the same tone as your calm scenes:

To help me, I create playlists for my books and add all the songs I think would be perfect as the soundtrack. I imagine my books as movies and what do movies have? Soundtracks! When writing a slower scene, I find songs that match the vibe and listen to them a few times to get in the "mood" of the scene.

3.) Talk to other writers for motivation:

Other writers can be a great help. We all share similar experiences with writing sometimes, and talking to others can help you gain more knowledge, talk through your problems, and maybe get some new ideas.

4.) Read other books and see how they tackle the calmer scenes:

Reading is always a good help and can give you ideas as well. Seeing how other writers word and structure their calmer scenes can give you a good idea on how to write yours.

5.) Let it be slow:

Having every single scene in your book be action packed can get a little dull itself. Not to say books like that are not great, but sometimes, the storyline needs a little break; a chapter or two to let the readers process what has happened and maybe let the characters gain some good advice or information needed to continue.

Thanks for reading to the end!
